PRESS RELEASE
Dean Borghi Fine Art is proud to announce “Painting with the Best of Them,” a solo exhibition showcasing the innovative works of pioneering Minimalist artist Neil Williams. This exhibition will be on view from September 13 to October 25, 2018, at our gallery located at 529 West 20th Street, 6th Floor.
Neil Williams (1934–1988) was a transformative figure in the New York art scene, celebrated for his groundbreaking shaped canvases that challenged traditional notions of form and space. Born in Bluff, Utah, Williams embarked on a remarkable journey that took him from the U.S. Marine Corps to the San Francisco Art Institute, and eventually to New York City in 1959, where he became deeply embedded in the avant-garde movement. His connections with luminaries like Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, and cultural icons such as Iggy Pop and David Bowie shaped his artistic outlook.
“Painting with the Best of Them” will highlight Williams’s pivotal role in Minimalism, showcasing works that embody his commitment to systematic abstraction and innovative canvas shapes. His participation in significant exhibitions, including the landmark Systemic Painting show at the Guggenheim in 1966 and the Whitney Annuals in 1967 and 1973, cemented his reputation as a key contributor to the movement.
As Williams’s career evolved, he began to blend painterly abstraction with floral motifs inspired by his experiences in Brazil, experimenting with mixed media, collage, and reliefs. His legacy lives on in major collections, including the Whitney Museum and the Denver Art Museum, as well as through his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
“This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the depth and diversity of Neil Williams’s work,” says [Your Name], [Your Position] at Dean Borghi Fine Art. “His contributions to Minimalism and post-painterly abstraction remain vital to our understanding of contemporary art.”
